G321 Preliminary Task Planning

The Planning Process

For our preliminary film, as a group, we created a mind map of initial ideas (inserted below). We thought it was important that we all had equal input in the very core ideas of our film. As part of a planning process we had to allocate roles in our group in order for the planning and production of the film to work efficiently and effectively. Tasks such as script writing and the shooting schedule were decided as a group. However, I was mainly in charge of the script writing, as I was going to be acting in the film therefore, it was logical for me to be in charge of the dialogue and acting side of things. As a group, we discussed the draft script I had written and made some changes to fit the brief more. All elements such as lighting, props and costumes were decided as a group.

Anna Dunbar and Marlin Cooper were mainly in charge of the types of camera angles and shots that were going to be used. Despite the whole group having an input in this I was focused on the script and developing the core idea into a plot. Therefore, Marlin and Anna considered all the different shots and angles we could use, as we felt it was important to vary this to ensure our film was creative and interesting to watch. Then, they decided how different camera angles and shots could complement the plot of the film and the script to create our desired effect on the audience.

The Cast and Characters

In our preliminary film, we only had two actors; myself and Gabriel Hayden. This is because we felt it would compliment the brief of a conversation well. It also meant that we could make the script more concise and create a clear plot, as well as being able to focus on the technical elements, such as camera work and shot types. The plot consisted of two friends, or accomplices plotting to murder someone, and one of the pair not taking the plot seriously and showing no interest whatsoever in following through with the murder and not doing so, despite there accomplice instructing them to. I played the role of a confident girl wanting to go ahead with the murder. We decided it would make sense for me to act in our film because I am a confident actress and am currently studying Theatre Studies. In addition, it was logical for a member of our group to be acting in our film as it meant I had a wider understanding of the plot and the film brief. Gabriel played the role of a mischievous accomplice, not to be trusted. He was chosen because of his ability and passion to act and he was suited to the character.
